Simple cutting is one of the oldest methods of creating
scars on the skin. Unlike skin peels no tissue is removed to create
the scar. Because this technique involves a single line cut many
designs, including tattoo flash, can be redrawn and turned in
to cuttings.
Traditionally cuttings were performed by many tribes
across Africa. Markings were often used to show status in the
tribe including age, rank, marital status and of course tribe
affiliation. The marks were often placed so that they would be
visible to others at all times. Scarification of this type was
also done for esthetic purposes and that is reflected in the designs
chosen. In recent years the art of cutting has hit the mainstream
and has been adapted for more modern designs while maintaining
inspiration from it's traditional roots.
